Bertagnole Livestock has been ranching for over 100+ years. Originally operated all over Salt Lake County, and Tooele County. Thanks to our grandad Angelo M. Bertagnole; our sheep camps started in 1890 at 12th East and 17th South in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1906 he homesteaded a piece of land in East Canyon. His holdings would later grow into over 20,000 acres with his four sons. Shortly after they extended our estate into Emigration, Parleys, and East Canyon. The Bertagnoles were grazing sheep in Emigration Canyon since before the 1920s. In 1956 Jay and Leo Bertagnole purchased Perkins Flat, where together they formed the Emigration Canyon Development Company. Throughout the years, the Bertagnoles hearded sheep along State Street, but as the cities grew we migrated over to Tooele County. In Tooele County, Leo raised and herded sheep, and became good friends with Ed Roberts. Ed later opened Tooele Valley Meats Butcher Shop. Eddie the 2nd has shared with us that during the years they would grow and herd sheep together. Per Eddie, one day Leo pulled up to the sheep camp with a brand-new Cadillac! Eddie stated that "Leo started loading the sheep in the car, and everyone was blown away by what he was doing!" Ed proceeded to ask, "Leo what are you doing putting all the sheep in your brand-new Cadillac?!" Granddad Leo replied, "They pay for it, they ride in it!" Many Sheep camps were along the Bertagnole Wells Rd. located in Tooele County, and still stands today. To many good stories to tell over the good old days, and not enough time! Jay and Karen Bertagnole married in 1957 and later came their two sons Randy and Shaun. Randy was born and raised in the ranch life. Randy's dream retirement was being on his ranch doing what he loves most. In 1977, Randy married Sharon, the woman of his dreams. During the many years in East Canyon, Jay, Gene, Randy, and their families would also run a horse riding stable for the public; which they named East Canyon Outfitters. They had hourly, half-day, full-day, and overnight trail rides that could also include camping and a good old cowboy experience with delicious food. East Canyon Outfitters even had celebrities like BYU football star Ty Deptner who would go on guided hunting trips with Jay, and Randy to get their big trophy bucks and bulls. In 1996, Randy and Sharon Bertagnole moved to Downey, ID. Here they have settled and continued our family traditions while incorporating cattle and farming into their passion for ranching. Over the years they have had 3 children, 9 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren that have been raised on the ranch. We strive to love and care for our family history and our animals. Life wouldn't be the same without it. Everyone that steps foot on our family ranch will always go home with a good story to tell. Randy continues to raise his animals while growing his fresh hay, and living life on the highway as an American Truck Driver. We are very proud to serve people with what we love doing, and from the bottom of our hearts, we appreciate you all supporting our family traditions.
